Worship at Mount Olive

Mount Olive's Worship is:

  • Lutheran. The Evangelical Lutheran Worship book empowers the congregation's prayer and praise each weekend.
  • Liturgical. The worship service centers on the ancient pattern of gathering, Word, Meal and sending. A wide variety of service orders are used throughout the Church year, providing creativity and deep engagement.
  • Sacramental. The baptismal font is central; each service begins with the pouring of the water and remembrance of baptism. Holy Communion is celebrated at each service, each weekend at Mount Olive. All are welcome to receive communion at Mount Olive which celebrates an open age communion invitation. Parents decide, in consultation with the pastors, when their child is ready to begin communing.

  • Centered on the Word of God. The pastors are gifted preachers who seek to connect the Word of God to life's daily joys and sorrows. The preaching is centered in the life giving message that we are justified (saved/healed/forgiven) by Jesus Christ by grace through faith.
  • Open to All. Mount Olive expects young children in worship. There is also a nursery at all worship services. We expect vistors.

Worship Schedule

You are invited to any of these worship opportunities this week.

Saturday
5:00 p.m.
Evening prayer with Holy Communion. This ancient service of prayers, lessons and Holy Communion leads us into Saturday evening and the beginning of Sabbath.
Sunday
8:00 a.m.
10:30 a.m.
Both Sunday morning service orders are always the same, drawn from the rich resource of the ELW (Evangelical Lutheran Worship) book. Worship on Sunday mornings at Mount Olive leans toward traditional, but in a welcoming and relaxed style. The liturgy of the Church, hymns of faith, lay leadership and weekly celebration of Holy Communion guide our prayer and praise.

Note: The second Sunday worship service begins at 9:30 a.m. during the summer (Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend). It begins at 10:30 a.m. the rest of the year.

Nursery care is available during all worship services and education hours.

Daily Prayer

Ten Ways To Listen For God:

  1. Start where you are:

Take a brief gentle inventory of your current awareness of God's presence in the day. Try to focus on what is already present in your awareness, and celebrate that you are answering God's nudges in your heart.

  2. Be gentle with yourself:

Most of the world encourages us to focus on our weaknesses and depend on our own will. Opening yourself to God's presence is not yet another thing to add to your "to do" list, but a way to relax into God's loving guidance.

  3. Take time for daily prayer and silence:

Find a time each day to be alone and in silence. Begin with small amounts of time, and increase this amount as you are able. Even three minutes of silence can make a difference.

  4. Pray the Bible:

Spend time with God's Word not to know it, but to be known.

Read the passage expecting that God will address you with a direct and personal message. It may be comforting, it may be challenging, it may be painful, it may be exciting.

Meditate on what you have just read. What speaks to you?

What is your response to God's Word? Express this to God.

Rest in God's Word. Allow yourself to simply "be" in God's divine presence.

  5. Journal:

Writing our feelings, experiences, observations and responses can be a way to observe the movements of God in our lives. Again, be gentle with yourself, and write from your heart.

  6. Celebrate the Sabbath:

Woven into the divine design of creation is the rhythm of activity and rest. One may take "mini-Sabbaths" throughout the day or extended periods of rest, but the primary purpose to step out of our frantic pace of life is for worship. When we gather for worship we do so with the body of Christ. Faith is a gift from God, and is fed and nourished when we gather as a family to participate in the Word and Sacraments.

  7. Examen:

This is a type of Sabbath that one can enjoy during the course of the day. It is a brief time of gentle reflection of God's activity in the day and your response. Don't try too hard to find God's activity, just relax in God's presence and listen to what God may show you. God is always actively creating in our lives and in the world around us. This simple interior glance can help our awareness of God's presence and activity.

  8. Practice hospitality:

In a world of anxiety and fear, offering hospitality is a grace-filled opportunity. Offering our time, sharing who we are and what we have is an expression of God's love. It is a way to appreciate and participate in God's presence.

Listen to others, leave time for play, and try to be fully present with those whom God sends your way. Be conscious of caring for your neighbors. Commend your family members and co-workers to God's care.

  9. Find a spiritual guide:

On our own it is easy to become discouraged or distracted from God's presence. Sharing our longing for God with another helps not only in our awareness of God's presence, but helps us be accountable as well. A spiritual director, pastor, or faithful friend can be of great help in the journey of faith.

  10. Give thanks:

In a world that encourages us to never be satisfied, the practice of appreciation can be a breath of fresh air. Pause throughout the day to give thanks to the One who provides for your every need. Even in times of stress and anxiety, pausing to give thanks can aid in our need to possess, and become more aware that we are the ones possessed by our wonderful Creator.
