Dear Friends in Christ Jesus,
I write today with a date change for the second meeting for those interested in further conversation following the recent vote at the August ELCA National Assembly. I also write with updates on the sanctuary roof project and the organ expansion and renovation project.
First, I sent you a letter the week of August 25 following the votes at the ELCA National Assembly. My letter reflected on the approval of the Human Sexuality document and the four accompanying resolutions that seek to change Church policy for the rostering of homosexual pastors in committed relationships. In that letter I invited all who would like further conversation to a meeting on Monday, September 28. I failed to note that WELCA is meeting that night for their annual fall kick off event. So, I am moving the meeting back to Monday, October 19 at 7 pm. Please make a note of the date change for your calendar if you are interested in attending this follow-up meeting.
Over the last four weeks I have engaged in many hours of conversation with members of the congregation regarding the ELCA National Assembly vote. The conversations have been representative of the complexity of the issue, many are opposed to the vote and many are in favor of the vote. Nearly all of the people who invited me out for coffee or to their homes are planning on staying here at Mount Olive. The consensus in the conversations is that we find our agreement and unity at the foot of the cross of Jesus Christ. While we may disagree on a variety of issues, we remain one in Christ Jesus.
I am sensitive to the intensity of the personal response for some. I do understand for some of you the vote may motivate you to leave the ELCA and Mount Olive. If you need conversation and prayer as you discern your response to the vote I invite you to call or e-mail to set up an appointment.
Second, the sanctuary roof project is well underway. It is guided by the remarkable Gene Ostrom. There have been a number of challenges with our unique roof, but all is moving along quite well. The funds are in place, either given or pledged. Now is the time to make your contributions to finish the project. Soon we will celebrate a newly insulated and improved roof.
Third, the work on the organ will begin this month. For many Sundays this fall the organ will be “off line.” The console is being rebuilt and upgraded, a new rank of pipes and chambers will be added. You will notice the crates in the hallway outside of the fishbowl as the work begins. If all goes according to plan, the organ will be back for late Advent, or Christmas. Special thanks to the major underwriter and to all who have donated to this project. As of today, we have the funds needed for this expansion and renovation.
Each day I am grateful for the call to serve as one of your pastors – in smooth sailing and during challenges, in plenty and in want.
Yours in Christ Jesus,
Pastor Peter Nycklemoe
