On Sunday mornings the high school youth meet for the youth forum, taught by a number of fantastic adult leaders. The forum continues the study of the Bible, as well as world religions, ethics and contemporary issues for faith. Another component of the youth forum is the monthly breakfast club and Church visits to other faith communities during the year. For the 2011-2012 program year, the theme will be "Manna and Mercy", a book by Daniel Erlander. The lead teacher will be Audrey Lukasak.
On Wednesday evenings, during the confirmation quarters, the high school youth meet to delve deeper into faith topics. For the fall of 2011, high school kids will discuss "Finding Your Fit" with Carole Joyce. For the winter in 2012, the high school kids along with the middle school kids will delve into "Faith and the Arts". The spring topics are to be determined...
Confirmation is a pastoral, educational ministry of the Church for 6-9th grade youth. Mount Olive offers a longer flex-based confirmation program. All 6-8th graders are required to attend Sunday morning confirmation class where the Bible is taught over the three year time period. The 9th graders join the high school youth forum, and once confirmed in the fall of their 10th grade year continue their study in youth forum. Wednesday Night Church Night Confirmation classes are offered on a quarterly basis.
In addition, sermon notes and community service hours are part of the required expectations for the confirmation program. The youth affirm their baptism (confirmation) in the fall of their 10th grade year after completing a faith statement and pastoral interview. Confirmation Sunday is always on the last Sunday in October, Reformation Sunday.
Good Earth Village this Summer!
Kids these days are plugged into computers, TVs, I-pods and Gameboys. Just like adults, kids need some un-plugged time to reconnect with our Creator; to remember what it is like to live in community with God and with others. The programs of Good Earth Village offer exactly this - time to spend in creation, to get back to basics and enjoy a face to face conversation with those around us.
