May 18, 2008 - Holy Trinity Sunday

Now the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain to which Jesus had directed them. When they saw him, they worshiped him; but some doubted. And Jesus came and said to them, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age."
-- Matthew 28:16-20

Jesus' final words before he ascends into heaven commission the disciples to make more disciples on Jesus' authority and in God's name - Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. The story of God's love and commitment to God's creation was too big to keep to themselves. Jesus promised that in this endeavor he will always be present.

The concept of God as "Three-in-One" is difficult for us to grasp. But then again, is it possible to truly grasp or understand God? On this upcoming Trinity Sunday we are reminded that God is so much bigger than our concepts of God. God is so much larger than our experience of God. God is attentive to each molecule in all of creation, but God is also so much more than all molecules put together.

What we cannot understand often leads to doubt. But like the disciples gathered with Jesus on the mountain we worship him in the midst of our certainties and doubts. And, like the disciples we are sent to tell others about Jesus love and grace.

Who taught you about Jesus? With whom are you called to share this great news? Know that Jesus is with you!

We pray: Almighty Creator and ever-living God: we worship your glory, eternal Three-in-One, and we praise your power, majestic One-in-Three. Keep us steadfast in this faith, defend us in all adversity, and bring us at last into your presence, where you live in endless joy and love, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen
