July 6, 2008 - 8th Sunday after Pentecost
In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the LORD sitting on a throne, high and lofty; and
the hem of his robe filled the temple. Seraphs were in attendance above him; each had six
wings: with two they covered their faces, and with two they covered their feet, and with
two they flew. And one called to another and said:
"Holy, holy, holy is the LORD of hosts;
the whole earth is full of his glory."
The pivots on the thresholds shook at the voices of those who called, and the house filled
with smoke. And I said: "Woe is me! I am lost, for I am a man of unclean lips, and I live
among a people of unclean lips; yet my eyes have seen the King, the LORD of hosts!"
-- Isaiah 6:1-5
The Lord certainly got Isaiah's attention. Imagine being in the Lord's presence,
especially in the company of six-winged seraphs and smoky air. It must have been quite a
sight. We, too would be filled with fear and trembling, yet awed by such a display of power.
What does it take for the Lord to get your attention? For most of us it takes powerful
displays before we notice God's presence. It can take surprising events before we
acknowledge God at all. During these days of national celebration take the time to give
thanks to God for all God's gifts. Hear the invitation to notice and acknowledge the
presence of the Lord in both the great and small.
We pray: You are great, O God, and greatly to be praised. You have made us
for yourself, and our hearts are restless until they rest in you. Grant that we may
believe in you, call upon you, know you, and serve you, through your Son, Jesus Christ,
our Savior and Lord. Amen
