January 27, 2008 - 3rd Sunday after Epiphany
- The people who walked in darkness
- have seen a great light;
- those who lived in a land of deep darkness
- on them light has shined.
-- Isaiah 9:2
In this season of long nights and short days the lack of sunshine can permeate
our souls. It can be difficult to navigate through the day, tired of body and spirit,
wondering about the sanity of our ancestors who landed here. Did they know what was ahead?
How did they survive the winters in their crude dwellings?
We can imagine that the fragile nature of life was more of a reality for them.
Because of our modern amenities we may have great health care and warm houses, but life
remains nothing less than a precious a gift from God. How easily we can take this
for granted.
It is into this darkness of our mindless, entitled nature that the light of Christ
comes. Life is a precious gift from God to be savored and shared with others.
Where do you need to experience the light of Christ in your darkness?
We pray: Lord God, your lovingkindness always goes before us and follows
after us. Summon us into your light, and direct our steps in the ways of goodness that
come through the cross of your Son, Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen
