June 10, 2007 - 2nd Sunday after Pentecost
- 4Sing praises to the LORD, O you his faithful ones,
- and give thanks to his holy name.
- 5For his anger is but for a moment;
- his favor is for a lifetime.
- Weeping may linger for the night,
- but joy comes with the morning.
- 11You have turned my mourning into dancing;
- you have taken off my sackcloth
- and clothed me with joy,
- 12so that my soul may praise you and not be silent.
- O LORD my God, I will give thanks to you forever.
-- Psalm 30:4-5, 11-12
What is your image of God? Is God present each day or far away?
Does your image of God involve judgment or compassion?
Our image of God reflects our relationship with God. If you see God
only as a faraway judge, you are likely to respond to God with fear and
trepidation. If you see God as compassionate and loving, you are less
likely to try to keep God at arms length.
This weekend when we gather for worship we will hear of a compassionate
and life-giving God who turns our mourning into dancing, clothes us with joy,
and raises us from death. Does that sound like something you need to hear?
I know I do!
We pray: Compassionate God, you have assured the human family of
eternal life through Jesus Christ. Deliver us from the death of sin, and
raise us to new life in your Son, Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen
