June 3, 2007 - Trinity Sunday
Jesus said to his disciples, "I still have many things to say to you,
but you cannot bear them now. When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide
you into all the truth; for he will not speak on his own, but will speak
whatever he hears, and he will declare to you the things that are to come."
-- John 16:12-13
As the end of the school year approaches teachers struggle to get in last
minute projects and teachings. Imagine Jesus as he leaves his disciples
before his death! He had so much to say to his beloved friends, and yet he
also had the wisdom to know that what he had to say they could not bear to hear.
Fortunately his teaching did not end with his physical presence. Last
Sunday we celebrated the coming of the Holy Spirit to the disciples and to
the world, as promised by Jesus. This Sunday we will celebrate God’s eternal
presence through the Trinity -- God who creates, Jesus who saves, and Spirit
who works to orient all creation towards God.
Imagine how hard the Spirit needs to work in our culture where we are
encouraged to look first to ourselves and not to God! But the Spirit will
always lead us to the truth -- the truth that we are loved by God and are
created a "little lower than the angels" (Psalm 8), and yet we are not the
center of the truth. God alone is truth. Can you bear it?
We pray: Almighty Creator and ever-living God: we worship your
glory, eternal Three-in-One, and we praise your power, majestic One-in-Three.
Keep us steadfast in this faith, defend us in all adversity, and bring us
at last into your presence, where you live in endless joy and love, Father,
Son, and Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen
